EXTREME SOUNDS ARTIST FEATURE
______________________________________

RUNZELSTIRN & GURGLESTOCK is the work of long-running avant-garde
visionary Rudolf Eb.er. Originally emerging from the Swiss
Schlimpfluch group, along with folk such as Joke Lanz (aka Sudden
Infant), RUNZELSTIRN has built quite a reputation for severe
recordings and unpredictable live shows. His is the noise of
spluttering soundscapes, hyperventilating, blood curdling screaming,
gagging, dogs barking, punches, vomiting, whistles, laughs, creaks,
pops and squeals that emerge through the oddly-timed silences. All
this delivered via intense, audience frightening ?aktion? performances
that will undoubtedly shock. See Rudolf?s amazing, disturbing
paintings at his website.

Dave Phillips has been a member of Schimpfluch Gruppe, Fear Of God,
Ohne and Dead Peni. In his solo work he blends together field
recording, real noise, insect recordings, cracked electro acoustic
sound and voice to create extreme computer music, crafting cartoonish
sketches with organic and synthesized sounds, cut and placed in
(seemingly) free-form arrangements. Expect shocking performances
designed to unsettle, disturb and make your skin crawl.

For a decade Sydney based Lucas Abela (aka Justice Yeldham and the
Dynamic Ribbon Device) has travelled the globe grinding his face into
a sheet of amplified plate glass. As he screams and hyperventilates
onto it and then pulls and squeezes at the sheet, the noise generated
wildly varies and wavers as it is run through some pedals and
processing that results in an orgy of speaker rattling noise. Expect
nausea, saliva, blood, fresh wounds and sickly sounds.

Performing at Liquid Architecture 8 in all 3 cities.

Through the magic of mirrors, multiple projectors and highly ingenious
live on stage editing, this French audiovisual performance group
produce and direct a new film with each of their performances. Working
around a core narrative, they spill eddies of impromptu vignettes,
accompanied by a live soundtrack of tape fragments and ancient
synthesiser sounds. These three collaborators, Jérôme Noetinger,
Christophe Auger and Xavier Quérel, have worked together for ten
years, and have succeeded in pushing the boundaries of film and
soundtrack into the realm of live performance.

SEMINAR

Digital Democracy Unpacked: A Critical Mapping of Five Ideal Typical Discourses

Dr Lincoln Dahlberg, School of Journalism and Communications
The University of Queensland

When: 1 June, 5-6.30pm
Where: UTS Broadway, Building 3, Level 2 (Room 210)

Digital democracy has become an increasingly popular topic among
academics, political commentators, and policy makers: there is much
talk about the potential of the Internet and other digital media
enhancing democracy. There has also been plenty of action, with
governments, civic organizations, universities and activists,
investigating this potential and supporting digital democracy
initiatives. All this commentary, research, policy making, and project
work draws on a diversity of understandings of digital democracy.
However, there is a lack of resources that clearly outline and examine
this diversity. This paper undertakes an ideal-typical reading and
critical evaluation of five digital democracy discourses and their
variations, with the aim of bringing attention to the range of
possibilities for democracy supported by digital media, and the
advantages and disadvantages of these different possibilities.

Lincoln is a post-doctoral research fellow in the School of Journalism
and Communication at The University of Queensland. He is co-editor of
the journal New Zealand Sociology and of the collection Radical
Democracy and the Internet (Palgrave, June 2007). Lincoln’s current
research involves a critical investigation of the practices and
meanings surrounding Internet use, with particular focus on the
extension of democratic cultures. He can be contacted at:

I was walking back to work from Chinatown after lunch this arvo when a woman came up to me and said that her car was out of petrol and that she didn’t have any money on her. She said she was up here from Melbourne to do a flight attendants course. There was something about the way she kept apologizing that got my sympathy. I gave her $60 which she promised she’d return to me at work tomorrow. Do you reckon she will? We’ll see…

pixies!

My mind was blown last night by pixies’ astonishing performance at Luna Park. A Great Performance of Great Songs by a Great Band. And a crowd of thousands of fans in [rather than on] ecstasy.

It was so much better than I could have hoped for! Earlier in the day I’d watched the recent doco loudQUIETloud which portrays the band members as fragile, damaged people, incapable of communicating with each other. The performances in that film were excellent, but pedestrian compared with what we were treated to last night. It was one of those magical occasions where artist and audience lift each other to great heights. Kim Deal was beaming for the whole show, as was the audience. And like many in the packed crowd, I danced like a maniac to most of the songs. Here’s a little taste, via my phone camera:

An unforgettable concert. Sure there’s plenty to discuss around why this groundbreaking band isn’t releasing or performing new material, but I’ll save that for another time. Right now I’m still coming to terms with the realisation that I may have just seen the best gig of my life.

I was resigned to the fact that I wasn’t going to see the pixies, cos I wasn’t prepared to go to the V festival, and they weren’t going to do any other shows. Now I’ve just found out that they’re playing at Luna Park this Friday - apparently this was only announced last week and it’s already sold out! At $75 it’s a rip-off, but I still would have gone… Does anyone here know of any spare tickets or any other way of getting in?

UPDATE!
I’M GOING TO SEE THE PIXIES - YAY!!!
Although many websites, including Ticketmaster, claim that it’s sold out, I was able to buy a ticket directly from the Luna Park ‘Big Top Sydney’ website. $86.35 incl. booking fee. It is a rip-off, but hey, this is an historic event! So who else is coming? Hit that website quickly if you want to get a ticket.

ONANI:
ONANI BRINGS DA RUCKUS. ONANI IS THE BLACK AND WHITE COOKIE OF NOISE. Daryl and Nic first jammed sometime in the middle of 2005 with pretty much no gear. Nic got a way brutal ear infection the next day, it must have brought the ruckus. Shits continued since, they got more gear. Once they freaked out these Axel Rose looking dudes when we played at this girls birthday party. They were all like “WTF,?!?!?!?”. Sound&Fury described Onani as “Harsh, but not grating. Dense, but not cluttered. You’d think they’d been at it for decades, such is the focus and maturity they display” but really, we’re just two kids who can’t play our instruments properly.

DJ MONOBROW (2RRR 88.5fm)
collector/hoarder of all things musically strange including outsider music; homemade/private press lp’s; barrel organ records; avant garde; free jazz; spoken word; grannies singing pop songs; kiddies singing comformist pop muzak; how-to language records; sexi flexi discs; christian ventriloquist puppets singing “Jesus Loves Me”; animals singing beatles songs; and more………

DJ CORPORAL LEPER(2RRR 88.5fm):
Dj Corporal leper like’s girl scouts in tumble dryers and the cackle sisters, is prone to obsessivley collecting bhamitzvah sing-along tapes and the sounds of people’s blenders. She likes to play recordings of people trying really hard and not gettting anywhere (talent show’s, jilted lover’s mixtapes, foghorn recordings for documentation purposes) and also has a love of noise.

She also does a radio show with her friend Josh on 2rrr 88.5fm called RADIO SHOW.

REV MUCKHOLE:

“I’ll let me pecs do the talkin”
