VJ Hell

Trying to prepare for the Science Fiction gig on Sunday.

Isadora was looking good, but the demo is crippled (can’t save) repeatedly crashes on my machine, and they expect one to pay hundreds of dollars to register an app that is unstable and still in beta (for Windows). I don’t think so..

vvvv is looking most likely. It’s free, similar to PD/Gem and seems to have plenty of users and resources. And it’s what Fold uses.

I’ve decided against MaxMSP/Jitter. Can’t afford it.

In the longer term I’d like to use PD/Gem, but I think I’ll wait until I can find some ready-made useful video patches to deconstruct (let me know if you know of any).

My VJing for this gig is going to be *very* basic. Process-based, semi-abstract, and dynamically responding to Ben’s audio. But if I manage to achieve what I’m planning, it should be fun (for me, anyway).

no rest

I have several upcoming activities:

Sunday September 25, 10pm – 1am: guest hosting Utility Fog on FBi Radio.

Then off to Newcastle for Electrofringe/This Is Not Art:

- Thursday September 29, 10am – midday: Workshop: Make Your Own Radio.

- Thursday September 29, late: Wake Up and Listen performance at TINA Opening Night Party.

- Saturday October 1, 3.30 – 5pm: Panel: Creative Commons vs Copyleft.

- Saturday October 1, 8-10pm: Wake Up and Listen live to air on This Is Not Radio.

I’ll be in Ncl from Wednesday thru Monday and would love to meet/catch up with you if you’re there. Other Alias Frequencies folk, such as Ben & Adrian will also be doing lots of stuff at the festival(s).

Then back in Sydney:

Sunday October 16, late: duo performance with Ben Byrne at The Metro. For this one I’ll be performing video. Yes, video.

Although I have a background in video (making short films, video art, installations) this’ll be my first ever ‘VJ’ gig (other than playing weird vids at friends’ parties). It’s something I’ve been wanting/meaning to do for years, but never got around to. Now with the offer of a gig, I have no more excuses, and have to get my shit together (I’m totally unprepared)! I have plenty of (mostly appropriated) images/vids that I can use, but how to manipulate them live? Knowing that Ben uses PD, I’ve been thinking about trying PD/GEM (or maybe MaxMSP/Jitter) but that’s a steep learning curve in a short time. Might have a chat with Fold about the software they use… Anyone reading this have VJ software suggestions? Nothing too cheesy, plz…

Vital Signs

I’m going to Melbourne for Vital Signs, where on Thursday arvo I’ll be on a panel about sound art/experimental music.

More info on the panel from its chair, Julian Knowles:

ON-AIR (2 hours) Sept 8, 2.00-4.00pm

PANEL (Philip Samartzis, Gail Priest, Shannon O’Neil, Nat Bates, Garth Paine, Matthew Hill) – with an offshore contribution from Daryl Buckley.

TOPIC: The past 5 years has seen a surge in activity in the Australian experimental sound and new/electronic music scenes, primarily through artist run festivals and events. Paradoxically, at the same time, there appears to have been some difficulty establishing adequate support across a range of areas for new and emerging practice. Presenters and artists are finding it more difficult than ever to create sustainable and stable careers and to develop the Australian scene, despite clear interest in the work both locally and internationally. This panel seeks to scan major trends in the field and identify critical issues.

********

As part of the session, there is around 20-35 minutes where the panel and audience can interact on issues and themes which emerge. This is a good opportunity for people to get involved in the discussion and make a positive contribution. The conference has been funded by the Australia Council, partly to inform it on the impact and consequences of the closure of the new media arts board. Please come if you can make it. I am encouraging the organisers to document the session online so further discussion and comment might be generated.

I’ll be returning to Sydney on Saturday evening. If you’d like to meet up while I’m in Melbourne, let me know.

giga

I have two gigs coming up in the next week:

Saturday August 27: The Audiotheque 2005 – has already been mentioned here a coupla times. I’ll be playing a solo laptop set

and

Monday August 29: if you like improvised music we like you – a duo performance with Rik Rue. This will be true ‘free improvisation’ as we only found out about the gig last week and won’t have an opportunity to rehearse beforehand. Should be fun!

Hope to see you at either or both of these, if you can make it.

Liquid Architecture 6 review

That’s a wrap!

Nat wraps LA6.

dis_or

Disorientation is on again this Wednesday. I’ll be DJing under the name Time Being (a name I came up with for my contribution to the VIVA[section] CD – this will be the first ‘performance’ under that name). The rest of the lineup looks great! I’m especially looking forward to Bernie Maier’s debut performance as !!* (pronounced Bang Bang Splat).

LA6: Canberra

was a huge success. The 260 seat theatre at the NGA was full! I went on second last (before DJ Olive) and for once was actually happy with my performance! I played in darkness, illuminated by the laptop, and did a spatial remix of the piece I made for Eclectic Bit earlier this year. It was probably the first real ‘diffusion’ performance that I’ve done (outside of film & theatre soundtracks). The only drawback was that I was on stage, rather than in the middle of the room.

It was a great day, and congratulations and thanks must go to the organisers: Nicole Ryan, Alistair Riddell and Nat Bates. Also to Lea Collins and Frank Meany for excellent tech support. And last but not least to Sam Karmel and Tarquin Manek for their excellent performance and for showing Nat & me Canberra’s blazing nightlife on a frozen (-8°) Friday night!

It was a wonderful way to wrap up Liquid Architecture for this year.
