regional australia’s ONLY experimental arts festival

10-11 november 2006

unsound is wagga space program’s (WSP) biennial experimental arts festival. unsound06 will be the fifth year of the festival’s presentation in the Riverina region. And this year it’s happening on a TRAIN!!!

YES that’s right we have defeated the forces of public liability dross and will present you with 8 carriages of visual and sonic digression as it wends its way through the Riverina landscape.

The unsound festival was originally conceived to address the need for experimental and contemporary sound to be performed in regional and alternative settings, and the programming of unsound06 is in keeping with WSP’s philosophy that the practice of arts is enhanced by the physical and philosophical spaces enabled by our regional location. Over the years unsound has received critical acclaim in the national arts arena and a reputation for challenging traditional art conventions through WSP’s use of alternative spaces such as train carriages, industrial sites, paddocks and heritage buildings for the presentation of art and sound based performances.

unsound06 will incorporate two nights of live performances and Loco Motivus an ambitious site-specific artist in residence program which will be presented on a train as it moves audiences through the Riverina landscape. The festival program will provide opportunities for audiences to directly access Australian and international artists who are leaders and/or emerging provocateurs in experimental sound and visual art forms, whilst also paying tribute to the context(s) of our environmental, audio-visual, industrial, and pre and post-colonial histories.

Loco Motivus

loco: from a place + motives: causing motion

The definition of Loco Motivus is an underlying philosophy for the project.

a) driving or pulling force; an impetus;

b) Serving to put into motion or propel forward;

c) Able to move independently from place to place.

Loco Motivus will take place on Saturday 11th November and involve eight historic train carriages journeying through the Riverina landscape. Prior to the unsound festival selected artists will spend a week in residence at the Junee Railway Workshop (home of the southern hemisphere’s largest working industrial turntable) where they will devise a installations for presentation in the Loco Motivus train. Referencing mutable physical, textual, visual, sonic and asomatous landscape(s), Loco Motivus will not act just as a mode of transport moving audiences through the landscape, but it will be a mobile site for performances and installations, such as (but certainly not limited to): theatrical performance, surround sound scapes, home made instruments, film screenings and visual arts.

Loco Motivus and unsound06 will include performances and installations by: Al Duvall (USA), Alan Lamb, Ernie Altoff, Gary Bradbury (ex-severed heads), Robin Fox, Anthony Pateras, Tom Ellard (ex-severed heads), Abject Leader, The Von Crapp Family, Robbie Aveniem, Justice Yeldham, Alex Gawronski, Singin’ Sadie, Dave Noyze, Sleepville, Sue Harding, Arthur Wicks, Shannon O’Neill, Rod Cooper, David Wicks and resident blogger Bernard Cohen, plus many more artists.
