Itinerary

OK, I’ve booked my flights. Here’s the itinerary:

Wednesday August 2 – San Francisco
Monday August 7 – San Jose (ISEA)
Monday August 14 – New York
Friday August 18 – London
Friday August 25 – Amsterdam
Monday August 28 – Berlin
Saturday September 2 – Sydney

That’s a bit less time in SF than I wanted, so depending on how things go I might delay going to SJ by a day or two..

If you have any suggestions for things to do, places to see, people to meet in any of those places, please let me know! My main intention is to check out the music and art scenes to see how they compare with Australia. I have a few contacts already, but more would be good.

Also some opportunities to present my work (eg gigs/talks/radio) would be nice, but that’s not my highest priority.

Apparently this is the peak travel season, so even with student discounts the flights alone cost four grand(!) which means I can’t actually afford to book accom right now. I’m saving madly and should be able to afford it soon, but any suggestions of good value (non-hostel) accom or friendly ppl to stay with would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve already lent you the ‘Spin Underground guide to the US’, have,’t I? If not I’ll bring it in tomorrow and copy the relevant pages.

You’re not doing L.A. at all? CAuse ‘The Viper Room’, ‘Whisky a go go’ and ‘Hustler Cafe’ are all within a block of each other, so you could do that, then just come straight back to Sydney…

  • Haha – I would like to check out LA’s alternative comedy scene, but I just don’t have time this time around. There’s a whole other US trip that I’d like to do one day, which would include Chicago, New Orleans and Boston…

That’d be great if you could copy that info for me – thanks!

    ‘Oh si haut!!!!’ Lucky you.

NY: If you are looking for a bite to eat and you are around E 21st street, I would highly recommend Giorgios – 27 E 21st Street (Ph:212 477 0007). It has a lovely pre dinner cocktail bar, pretty cheap amazing modern cuisine and the atmosphere is lovely with friends. But this is probably not very useful, you will be in the flow with others no doubt!

If you do go there, please head directly east after you exit and don’t stop (not too far) till you come to the place that is quite evidently reason enough, it is visible to the public, yet, unattainable, and we came across it by accident, on a cooler evening in summer, when the air was full with a cooler moisture than was typical in the summer.

I rocked up to the city in one of those blue shuttle things you get from the airport, because the underground was a pain from JFK, and it was well worth the 10 (?) US because it was the first time I had ever been there, and I appreciated the city revealing itself to me in a series of stills rather than being under and then up.

We got really tired of walking and the underground and hired bikes, which was much nicer, let us get to more art more quickly, and gave us more energy for the evening! Glad you have been walking every day :)

More bars than shops I reckon!

Have you sorted your accom in NY?

  • Damn, I’ll be arriving in NYC three days after you. Would’ve been cool to meet up there! As it is, I assume you’ll be on a plane to London…

  • Gosh darnit! It’s possible that you’ll be arriving shortly before I leave, but I expect you’ll be busy.

Oh well, come to Liquid Architecture and say hi! :)
