I feel for you.
My Dad died of smoking a few years ago. My brother and sister quit before he died but I continued to smoke. I have now quit and found that I have strength of charachter I didn't know I had. The best advice I heard and will pass on to anyone who wants to hear......JUST GROW UP........
Don't um and ahh about it, make an adult decision and just do it. It is way easier than you think, you just have to be in control of your mind.
PEACE

I'm a 'social smoker' ie only when I'm out of the house, and usually only with alcohol. But I'm going to try to stop.

I smoke irregularly these days but enjoy both sides. I feel healthy and great when I haven't smoked for a while but I also love everything about smoking when I do (the taste /aroma, the rolling lighting process, the social thing). I often wonder why 90 % of the creative / more aware people I know whom I would consider friends, all smoke or have for a good period of their life. Its a filthy habbit but it also seems to attract certain personalities and lifestyles.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone - and you're all smokers, yes? ;) Except for you, ana - I'm so happy that you've stopped!

shannon, I am so sorry.

For smokers who want some advice: I think that it might be easier than you think it will be. It is just the starting that is the worst, and later it will start to feel like the most normal thing in the world.

The things that helped me were: quitline - 13 quit, nicotine patches As Well As nicotine lozenges for during cravings, thinking that every craving will be your last, drinking two to three glasses of water if you feel like a cigarette, staying extremely busy, and being very nice to yourself in every single way.

All my love snaz.

That is awful news. I have an uncle, former smoker, staying with us while he undergoes radio/chemotherapy for esophageal cancer. Smoking is evil.
