Just had a great chat with John Jacobs who, in case you didn’t know, is da man, and he recommended Resolume. So I’m about to give it a go. Hopefully this is the solution (for Sunday’s gig, at least). Wish me luck!

Resolume is great. I would have recomended it earlier but I thought you were after something more complex. Very functional software (and easy to use
It is very easy to use, but surprisingly powerful – especially wrt responding to audio. It is lacking in some ways though, and is very 2D, although I’ve found some good Freeframe plugins that provide pseudo 3D effects.
I’m definitely going to spend more time exploring vvvv and PD/Gem but for getting something useful up and running in a short timeframe, Resolume has been a life saver!
JJ certainly is ‘da man’.
Good luck for Sunday – hope you can find the space to have fun with it too. It looks like endless hours of procrastination pleasure to me.
B-)
thanks bettina. after a week or so of stressing about it and researching like crazy, i’m now pretty happy with what i’m doing. a whole new area of practice that i’ve been wanting to do for years is now looking very possible.
not that i really want to be a ‘vj’ – i’ve spent enough time on vj forums and websites recently to know that that’s not my scene at all… but at last i feel comfortable adding live video to my (and other people’s) music. i’m still a long way from doing the sort of stuff that, say, severed heads does, but at least i’m on my way…
some of the procrastination is pretty dull though. i spent most of the last couple of days converting images and rerendering clips – testing codecs resolutions and frame rates… i’ve learnt a lot tho…
Now all I want is a program that does everything Resolume can do, but also has more complex fft analysis & modulation, true 3D graphics, as well as AudioMulch-style audio capabilities (Resolume is mute, unfortunately. I’d like to use it as an audiovisual sampler, but also do AudioMulch-style patching and manipulation).
That’s not too much to ask for, is it?
PD/Gem could probably do it. Anyone got a patch they’d like to send me?
(otherwise it’d probably take me years to program one – would be a worthy project, though…)
If I’m going to keep using AudioMulch for music and Resolume for video, I’m going to need to get a second laptop, which will not be feasible for some time…
